Rosacea is an inflammatory, chronic skin condition, affecting approximately 14 million Americans, in the 30 to 60 age range. It is  characterized by redness and flushing of the forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. It may also produce small pustules or pus-filled bumps. Dark skinned people are less affected by rosacea than fair-skinned people, but it can affect people with any skin type.

As this skin condition progresses, the flushing becomes even more noticeable and persistent. In very severe cases, a large portion of the face is affected. The skin disorder affects a more significant number of women than men but is usually more severe for the latter. In some cases, men may suffer permanent facial changes like very noticeable thickening of the skin on the nose.

At Mohave Dermatology, we offer excellent rosacea treatments. Our expert dermatologists are here to help you understand what the cause of your infection is, the available treatment options, and the best way to manage the condition.

What Causes Rosacea?

The causes of rosacea are currently not known. However, researchers and scientists have many ideas about what might cause this condition. Rosacea often runs in the family. This means some people are genetically predisposed to this chronic skin condition. This, in combination with environmental factors, could be the cause. Sometimes, blood vessel disorders can trigger the condition, resulting in flushing of the facial skin.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea causes wide-ranging symptoms, including:

  • Uncontrollable blushing
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pimple-like blemishes or bumps
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Enlargement of the nose due to skin thickening (generally in men)

Individuals that have rosacea tend to experience periods of sudden flare-ups and short periods of remission (disappearance/decrease of symptoms). There is also often a “butterfly” pattern which is easily visible on the face. While this is not a life-threatening, even mild rosacea symptoms can affect the quality of life.

We at Mohave Dermatology have noticed that a large percentage of patients suffering from this condition have very low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence. People that have rosacea also tend to avoid attending social events and prefer to stay away from people overall.

Rosacea Treatment at Mohave Dermatology

There isn’t any known cure for rosacea. However, various treatments can =ease the symptoms and help manage them over time. We have expert dermatologists on our team that will carry out a detailed examination and ask you questions about your symptoms. They will also take the time to understand whether, in your case, the condition has a genetic connection.

Based on their visual assessment and tests (if required), they will help you determine which treatment approach is best for you. Typically, our patients notice improvements within one to two months of treatment. Your specific condition will determine which treatment will be used, but the most common ones are:

  • Topical creams and lotions
  • Oral Antibiotics
  • Laser therapy in case of severe symptoms like permanently enlarged blood vessels

It’s essential to understand that there isn’t any known method to prevent recurrence of rosacea. However, you can take specific steps to control or reduce the symptoms such as:

  • It’s crucial that you continue with your treatment plan even if your condition improves and the rosacea clears. This will help ensure it doesn’t reappear.
  • Treat your skin gently- avoid harsh skin care products such as ones that contain alcohol. Stick with mild cleansers and soaps.
  • It would be best if you also avoided rosacea triggers like alcohol, spicy food, extreme temperatures, and sun exposure.
